Nicaragua

Jinotega

1,100–1,700 m

Jinotega is Nicaragua's most important coffee department, producing the majority of the country's specialty coffee. Its misty mountains and relatively lower altitudes are compensated by exceptionally fertile volcanic soils. Nicaragua's coffee history is intertwined with its political history — many farms were nationalized and later privatized, creating a complex landscape of family farms, cooperatives, and large estates.

What makes it special

Jinotega produces excellent value-for-money specialty coffees with jammy, sweet profiles. Several rare large-bean varieties like Maragogipe ("elephant bean") grow here and are treasured by enthusiasts.
