“Flat-bed brewing is not complicated — it is only expensive. The UFO removes one of those obstacles.”
Nucleus Coffee Tools launched in Toronto, Canada, in 2016 as a small-batch equipment brand committed to making precision coffee gear accessible. Founded by specialty coffee professionals who had grown frustrated with the price barrier of high-end equipment, Nucleus focused on tight-tolerance manufacturing in materials that mainstream boutique brands avoided — machined aluminum, stainless steel, and components already in widespread supply through existing coffee ecosystems.
The UFO Dripper emerged from a simple observation: flat-bed extraction produced some of the most even, balanced cups in the world, but flat-bed drippers either required proprietary expensive filters or compromised on geometry. The UFO solved both problems by using the standard Aeropress-compatible paper disk — already widely available, affordable, and well-suited to fine-tolerance brewing — as its filter medium, producing a brew bed with genuine flat geometry without a premium price.
For the specialty community, the UFO represented something more than a budget alternative. It was proof that the principles behind high-end flat-bed brewers could be separated from prestige pricing and delivered accessibly. Nucleus shipped their first UFO units through direct-to-consumer channels, building a devoted following among home brewers who wanted consistent, clean extraction without investing in a full professional setup.
Flat-bed brewing is not complicated — it is only expensive. The UFO removes one of those obstacles.
The disk sits perfectly level in its ring, thin as a page, and the water moves across the shallow bed in visible rings. Everything happens in plain sight — there is no depth to hide in, no wall to pour against. The cup is honest.
